Once you have everything physically hooked up, which we won't go into here, you're ready to format some disks! On the BeOS, it's hillariously simple.

Preparing a ZIP disk on the BeOS

  1. Load up "DriveSetup", which can be found in the Preferences folder.
  2. Click on your ZIP drive in the list; It should come up as something like "/dev/disk/scsi/050" or "/dev/disk/scsi/060", depending on which SCSI ID you have selected on the drive. Once you find it on the list, select it by clicking on it.
  3. With the drive highlighted, select the pulldown menu "Setup", the item "Initialize", and the sub-item "Be File System".

Walla!

You can now use your ZIP disk by selecting the drive and mounting it like any other disk in the BeOS. Note that you should always un-mount them before removing Zip disks!

If you have any other questions, feel free to to send me mail. I'd be happy to try and answer any questions you have; These are great drives. And even if they kind of sucked, which I can't say that they do, it's still hard to pass up because of the cost. IOMega's got a winner.
